So much so that the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner arrived to the Mets’ minor-league camp on Sunday — one week early — to get a head start on the 2017 baseball season. He’ll participate in the Mets’ STEP Camp for early arrivals, beginning Monday.
Per The Record of Bergen, N.Y., Yankees manager Joe Girardi and trainer Steve Donohue visited the mound Friday night upon seeing Chapman shake his left arm. But Chapman stayed in the game, and Girardi said afterward that his closer was not experiencing any pain or discomfort.
While an MRI was negative, Yankees GM Brian Cashman anticipates Chapman being sidelined for about a month, the New York Daily News reports.
Chapman’s injury has to be disconcerting to the Yankees, who signed the reliever to a five-year, $86 million contract just over a month ago.
Dellin Betances is expected to take over the closer role in Chapman’s absence.
